J.E.B. Stuart Papers

.

.

These pages contain my transcriptions of some of Stuart's papers from the Virginia Historical Society and elsewhere.  I have not seen these published before, although I have seen a few of them quoted from or referred to.  Most of the papers were written by Stuart, in his small, beautifully neat handwriting, but a few were written by others.  All spelling, capitalization, and punctuation is the same as in the originals.  To correct it would remove the character and the "voice."

.

I have also left in strikeouts, because the words Stuart thought about including demonstrate what he was thinking as much as the words he chose.

.

A new addition!  I've finally finished transcribing the David French Boyd manuscript!

.

Future additions to these pages will include articles regarding Stuart from the Richmond Daily Dispatch during the war, and a treatment of the dispute between Stuart and Gen. Isaac Trimble about who got credit for what after the capture of Manassas Junction in 1862.  Stay tuned!

The Boyhood of General J.E.B. Stuart

Manuscript from the archives of Louisiana State University, written by David French Boyd, who had been a childhood friend of Stuart's.  This was written in 1896 and is somewhat rambling, therefore I've edited out what I consider irrelevant and uninteresting.  Boyd submitted the manuscript to Flora Stuart, who added her own annotations.  She was not very pleased with it, but there are parts of it that are too priceless for it to go unread.
